Gluten-Free Crackers Trail Mix is perfect for any time. Perfect for a trip to the park with kids or a hike. It is a great and healthy snack. Have it with a little chocolate or not. Trail mix is a combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and additions. Of course, my recipe is a gluten-free one. Extras could be chocolate, candy, popcorn, gluten-free pretzels, or gluten-free crackers. A tasty crunchy, salty, and sweet treat. Additionally, the raisins give it a chewy component.
Gluten-Free Crackers Trail Mix
Nuts: Most importantly, use raw nuts. Roasted nuts are often coated with unhealthy ingredients. Not to mention, roasted nuts have hydrogenated oils that are not healthy. Therefore, I highly suggest using raw nuts. Not to mention, raw can be used in trail mix. It is easy to roast any nut yourself.
Dried Fruit: Consequently, make sure to use no sugar added, sun-dried, and unsulfered fruit. Needless to say, sun-dried fruit is more expensive but worth it. Indeed, the only ingredient should be sun-dried fruit. Dried fruit will add natural sweetness to the trail mix. Cut large pieces of dried fruit smaller. Believe it or not, Costco does sell some unsulfered sun-dried fruit. In conclusion, Amazon has them too.
Seeds: Needless to say, look for raw seeds. Roasted seeds often contain ingredients that are unhealthy. However, have nutritional value. Use whatever seeds you like.
Extras: Extras include chocolate, candies, popcorn, pretzels, or small crackers. In conclusion, Dark chocolate has more health attributes. I use my Homemade Chocolate Chip recipe. Nevertheless, be sure to use Non-GMO and organic popcorn kernels. Fresh popped popcorn is the healthiest. Before adding any extra ingredient be sure to read the ingredients on the package.
How to roast Nut and Seeds:
Check: Last but not least, double-check the nuts. If rancid toss them out.
Size: Indeed, it is best to use whole nuts as they toast evenly. Larger nuts such as pecans and walnuts may take 8 – to minutes to roast. While, peanuts, pine nuts, and pistachios will be quicker.
For Best Results: Don’t mix nuts together. They will toast unevenly.
What to look for: Light brown is what to look for. Stay close by so the nuts don’t burn. Most importantly, use your nose to detect doneness. Once you begin to smell the nuts or seeds they are done.
Roasting in the Oven: First, turn the oven to 375. Shake the nuts onto a 1/4 sheet pan. Do not oil the pan. Bake for 5- 10 minutes for nuts. One to three minutes for seeds.
