Speculaas Sweet Potato Pie with old-world flavors that elevates this pie. Full of warming spices perfect for Fall, Winter, and the Holidays. Indeed, they are Vintage holiday flavors from Europe. You may be asking what is Speculaas? Well, it is a traditional classical favorite from Holland and Germany. The Speculaas Spice blend has cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, mace, and others.  In my humble opinion, it is the equivalent of the American Pumpkin Spice.A slice of Sweet Potato pie with a gingersnap crust in the background.

Speculaas Sweet Potato Pie

Indeed, if it is so similar to Pumpkin Spice why not use it in a classic iconic American Pie? So, that is what I did. I turned this old-world spice mix into a new-world dish. However, in doing research, I found that in the USA most people in the North eat Pumpkin Pie vs Sweet Potato Pie in the South. In my humble opinion, both have their place and both are a delectable treat. However, if you have never had Sweet Potato Pie I highly recommend this recipe.

According to my research, an African Slave named Abbey Fisher was the first to publish a recipe for sweet potato pie in 1881. At any rate, her cookbook was called “What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Southern Cooking by Mrs. Fisher.” Interestingly enough, this cookbook still survives. Her recipes were written down as per her dictation as she was illiterate. For more information and history about Mrs. Fisher click here.

Incidentally, I, for one, am grateful to Mrs. Abbey Fisher for publishing a cookbook in 1881 with a Sweet Potato Pie recipe.  Consequently, if you are interested in Mrs. Fisher’s cookbook, Amazon sells it.

Jean-Yves, thanks so very much for the kind words. Speculoos are from Belgium. Speculaas are cookies with a specific (Speculaas Spice) in them. These cookies are common to Germany and the Netherlands. Love this time of year. Love traditions, cultures, and customs. May your week be blessed.

This recipe is perfect. I just bought some speculaas cream (it looks like peanut butter) and was wondering what to make with it! I think I could use it for this sweet potato pie! Definitely going to give this a try!
